Requirements for Master's and Professional Degree Students (MA, MS, MPP, JD, MD, MSW, etc.)

A certificate/specialization will be granted when an applicant has fulfilled all course requirements in their degree program and the following LACS requirements:

Students can select from among dozens of LACS courses or equivalent non-cross-listed courses approved by CLACS. See this sample of cross-listed courses.

Proficiency for MA students should be equal to one year of language study and can be demonstrated in one of the following ways:

  1. Passing the Practical Language Proficiency Assessment administered by the Chicago Language Center.
  2. Completing a UChicago course beyond the second-year level (above 20300) in a regional language.
  3. Having received a high school diploma or undergraduate degree from an institution in which the language of instruction is one of the languages listed above (e.g., a BA degree from a university in Latin America or Iberia).
  4. Satisfactory placement exam results plus an interview with appropriate faculty.

This typically takes the form of a seminar or longform research paper or MA thesis/capstone, or PhD Dissertation. The project should be advised by a faculty member affiliated with CLACS or approved for that purpose by the LACS certificate adviser.

Applicants to the certificate program must present their work at a relevant Council on

Advance Study (CAS)-sponsored workshop or another event approved by CLACS (e.g., the CLACS Graduate Symposium or relevant graduate-level forum). This experience is

foundational because it encourages students to develop the skills necessary to present their research to an interdisciplinary audience and serves as a capstone to their participation in our intellectual community. Workshop schedules are developed quarterly; CLACS organizes a Graduate Symposium every Spring. Students must submit with their application the LACS Certificate presentation evaluation form (unless they present at the LACS Graduate Symposium). The form must be signed by a UChicago faculty member who was present at said presentation.

MA, MS, or professional (MPP, MSW, JD, MD, etc.) graduate students must participate in at least 1 relevant event and submit a reflection of the specific events with their application.

Event reflections will respond to questions about the content and context of the event(s), and aligned with learning objective 4, to show that students effectively employ their literacy about the politics, ecologies, and cultures of the region to produce generative knowledge and perspectives on the places and peoples Greater Latin America.

Advising

Interested students are encouraged to meet with LACS program adviser Diana Schwartz Francisco as soon as they decide to pursue the certificate/specialization so that she can provide guidance and answer questions. Students are strongly encouraged to meet early in their program with Prof. Schwartz Francisco to discuss their plan for completion of certificate requirements, cultivate their research interests, and work with her to identify a faculty adviser for the master’s thesis.

Application

We ask students to submit their certificate/specialization application no later than the end of the first week of, the intended quarter of graduation. Please complete the LACS Graduate Certificate/Specialization application and submit it to dischwartz@uchicago.edu.
